Abstract

This study deals with the effect of TBL approach on students’ achievement in reading comprehension. The objective of the study is to find out how TBL approach affect students’ achivement in reading comprehension. The population was 120 students. This study was conducted with an experimental research. In this case, the writer took 60 students of SMP Swasta HKBP Sidorame Medan as the sample and they were divided into two classes. The first group was experimental group, it was taugt by using TBL approach, while the second group was control group, it was taught by conventional approach. Objective test was used as the instrument for collecting the data. Those tests consisted of two types; they were pre test and post test. Based on the result of the data analysis, the reliability of the test was 0.87. It was categorized very high. And tobserved is 4.000. It is proved that Ha was accepted because tobserved is bigger than ttable. It means that the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by using TBL approach is higher than those taught by using conventional approach.

Abstract

Bernice McCarthy, who developed the 4MAT system in 1981, incorporates Kolb’s four learning modern and recent research on right/left brain hemispheric processing. According to the 4MAT System, each person’s learning style is a combination of perceiving and processing information as described into for major styles, namely : innovative learners, analytic learners, common sense learners, and dynamic learners. Learning Style in accordance with 4MAT Model System analyze the students learning style on how they are thinking, doing, and the preferences. Through students’ preferences, The Innovative Learners, Analytic Learners, Common Sense Learners, and Dynamic Learners applied interactive process in reading familiar topics. The interactive process they applied is the combination of bottom-up and top-down process. In reading the unfamiliar topics, the Innovative Learners, Analytic Learners, Common Sense Learners, Dynamic Learners applied the bottom-up process. They read word by word without related the meaning to the context. The application of data driven process was also involved in their reading process. The subjects applied the interactive process in comprehending the familiar texts because they activated their background knowledge on the topics discussed in the familiar texts that helped them to comprehend the texts. On the other hand, the subjects applied the bottom-up process in comprehending the unfamiliar texts because the topics is still new for them that they cannot activated their background knowledge.

Resmon Siburian

Abstract

Since the students’ achievement of SMA Negeri 7 Binjai in reading comprehension was still under expectation, it was necessary to find out what learning scenario was suitable to improve the learning achievement. It was considered that 5E (Engagement, Exploration, Explanation, Elaboration, Evaluation) model and PjBL (Project-Based Learning) model could improve the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. This research was nducted to find out: (1) which of the two learning models significantly affects the students’ achievement in reading comprehension. (2) whether the students’ gender affect their achievement in reading comprehension. (3) whether there is an interaction between learning models, 5E model and PjBL model, and students’ gender, female and male, to students’ achievement in reading comprehension. An experimental research with factorial 2x2 was used in this research. This research was conducted at SMA Negeri 7 Binjai in grade X science as the population, academic year 2014-2015. There were two classes of three classes of X science chosen as sample of this research which consist of 43 and 44 students. Class X science 2 was treated with 5E model while class X science 3 was treated with PjBL model. Students’ achievement in reading comprehension was measured with objective test. The data was analyzed with two-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) at the level of significance α= 0.05. The data analysis reveals that (1) the students’ achievement in reading comprehension taught by 5E  model is higher than that of the students taught by using PjBL model where Fobserved= 5.84 > Ftable = 3,96. (2) the female students’ achievement in reading comprehension is higher than male students’ where Fobserved= 18.18  > Ftable= 3,96. (3) there was no an interaction between learning models, 5E and PjBL model, and students’ gender female and male, on students’ achievement in reading comprehension where Fobserved= 3.82 < Ftable= 3,96. Students’ gender does not affect the students’ achievement in reading comprehension but the learning model itself. English teachers should apply the 5E model.
