The Episteme Journal of English Linguistics and Literature  (JLL) is  double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by English Department, Faculty of Language and Arts  HKBP Nommensen University - Medan - Indonesia  . The journal focuses on the following topics: English language, applied  English linguistics, theoretical English linguistics, Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, comparative linguistics, computational linguistics, and discourse analysis. It provides an academic platform for professionals and researchers to contribute innovative work in the field. JLL carries original and full-length articles that reflect the latest research and developments in both theoretical and practical aspects of Linguistics and Literature .

The journal is published in both print and online versions. The online version is free access and download.

e-Version  is a feature offered through our journal platform. It allows PDF version of manuscripts that have been peer reviewed and accepted, to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final printed journal. Readers can freely access or cite the article.
We aim to publish accepted manuscripts in e-Version  in two week's time after the final draft completed.

Paper Selection and Publication Process

a. Upon receipt of paper submission, the Editor sends an E-mail of confirmation to the corresponding author within 1-3 working days. If you fail to receive this confirmation, your submission/e-mail may be missed. Please contact the Editor in time for that.

b. Peer review. We use double-blind system for peer-review; the reviewers' identities remain anonymous to authors. The paper will be peer-reviewed by three experts; one is an editorial staff and the other two are external reviewers. The review process may take about 2 weeks.

c. Notification of the result of review by E-mail.

d. The authors revise paper and pay publication fee (100 USD).

e. After publication, the corresponding author will receive two copies of printed journals, free of charge.

f. E-journal in PDF is available on the journal's webpage, free of charge for download.

Students’ Perception to The English Lecturer
           In The Teaching Learning Process at Music Department FBS UHN

 Abstract

     The objective of this research is to know students’ perception to the English lecturer in the teaching learning process at English Class at Music Department the students answer the questionnaire consits of 20 question with 36 respondents. Bloom’s field theory is applied in descriptive qualitative, the way to categorize the levels of reasoning skills required in classroom situations. There are six levels in the Bloom’s field theory, they are knowledge, comprehension, application analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The question of questionnaire are positive and negative, positive rated each option with a core that is A with a score 5, B with a score 4, C with a score 3, D with a score 2 end E with a score 1 but negative rated each option with a score that is A with a score 1, B with a score 2, C with a score 3, D with a score 4 and E with a score 5. The result of comulatif data scores obtained from 2 the questionnaires.   Students’ perception to the English teacher  in the teaching learning process is enough (57,33)  From the scores of perception, lecturer of English in Music Department in  2014-2015 academic year is 57.33. Based on score scale this is considered on the level of  enough. The perception should be improved.

Politeness Strategy In Maxims

Abstract

     The staffs of FBS – UHN  Medan used four of six types of politeness principles in directive and expressive speech act to communicate with the students at their services. They were tact maxim, generosity maxim, approbation maxim and agreement maxim. The dominant type of politeness principles used by the staffs of  FBS – UHN  was tact maxim. Staff needs the ability to communicate politely The staffs were easier and felt more as older and appropriate in using this type in directive speech acts as mostly focused on by the researcher. The students  didn’t comply with all the staffs’ utterances although they were already in polite way. Staffs  gave their  polite response to some students’ utterances or commands but in other way they ignored the some else staffs’ utterances to them, this was because of the influence of positive emotions and also strongly affected by their  poor  pragmatic competence.

An Analysis of Code Switching and Code Mixing as Found in Television Advertisement

Abstract

     This study deal with the types of Code Switching and Code Mixing as found in Indonesia television advertisement. It is focused on ANTV television advertisement as one of the most popular television program in Indonesia recently. It set out to find out the types of Code Switching and Code Mixing in ANTV television advertisement, to find out the most dominant type of Code Switching and Code Mixing and to analyze the reasons of using Code Switching and Code Mixing. The data of this study were 100 advertisements that found in ANTV television advertisement during the research from 1 - 10 March, 2015. This research was conducted by using Descriptive Qualitative Research. The technique used to collect the data was Documentary technique means reading, studying, and analyzing all the data. The data were analyzed by using Hoffman theory of Code Switching and Code Mixing. Based on the data analysis, it was found that there were three types of Code Switching found in ANTV television advertisement namely Intra-sentential Switching, Inter-sentential Switching and Tag Switching. Besides, it was also found that there were three types of Code Mixing found namely Intra-sentential Mixing, Intra-lexical Mixing and Involving a change of pronunciation. The most dominant types of Code Switching and Code Mixing used in ANTV television advertisement was Inter-sentential Switching with percentage 32 (32%). Further, There are seven reasons of using Code Switching and Code Mixing based on Hoffman theory, they are Talking About Particular Topic, Quoting Somebody Else, Being Emphatic about Something (Express Solidarity), Interjection (Inserting Sentence Fillers or Sentence Connector), Repetition Used for Clarification, Intention of Clarifying the Speech Content for Interlocutor, and Expressing Group Identity.  But In this research, the writer did find the ‘Quoting somebody else’ reasons in Television advertisement.

An Analysis Of Politeness Principles Of Lecturer’s Utterances

Abstract

     This study deals with the politeness principles in lecturer’s utterances while teaching functional grammar by using Leech’s theory they are tact maxim, approbation maxim, generosity maxim,  modesty maxim, agreement maxim, and sympathy maxim  The writer chooses a lecturer in UHN Medan. The study used descriptive qualitative research design. The study is aimed  to find out 1. the types of politeness that is used in Lecturer’s Utterances.2. to find out each of the most dominant types of politeness principles used in Lecturer’S Utterances.The instrument used in this study in collecting the data are recording and taking notes. All the utterances related to politeness principles produced by the subject written down in book, then 461 utterances are choosen to be analyzed. The data areanalyzed by using Miles and Hubberman’s data analysis.The result of this research  are nothing for sympathy maxim, while the other five types are used by them. Then the most dominant type used by  the lecturer in his utterances is tact maxim, that consist of 262 utterances, it is 56.83%.It means that the lecturer try to be tactful in communication by try to maximize benefit to others. He avoid an envy and jealous attitude to others. Based on Leech theory the lecturer used Politeness principles in his interaction because of cost benefit to others, optionality scale, and indirectness scale. The lecturer of UHN applied politeness principles in his utterances while teaching functional grammar in order to avoid conflict and problems in communication and to create good communicatin with the students by apreciating one another.This research was expected to benefit theoretically and practically. Theoretically, this study is expected to be a good constribution as useful references for those who want to make a futher  research on the same area with different focus and object. Practically, this study could be made as the model for teacher, lecturer and people or reader. By studying the politeness principles people can be careful to determine the choice of words, phrase, clause and sentence in expression the ideas or meaning in a given context. Because being polite is an important thing in our life to connect to other.

                  Improving Students’ Pronunciation Mastery by Using English Songs

Abstract

     The objective of this study is to find out whether English songs can improve students’ pronunciation mastery..This study was conducted by using Classroom Action Research. The subject of this study was the eight semester students of English Department of FKIP HKBP Nommensen University. The writer used Arsyad’s theory in using songs as media The research was conducted in two cycles. The first cycle and the second cycles. The instruments for collecting data used oral test for quantitative data and test used diary notes, questionnaires sheet, and observation sheet for qualitative data.  The writer concludes that songs can improve students’ pronunciation mastery. The improvement can be shown from the result of the research, from the mean of the students’ score from pre-test up to post-test II. The mean students’ score in pre-test is 43,83 the mean of post-test cycle I is 69.13, and the mean of the post-test cycle II is 88.33. it was found that English songs can improve students’ pronunciation mastery.

The Effect Of  using Teaching Media on Students Vocabulary Mastery

Abstract

     Language is the primary means of communication in our life. To use it people must know about words of that language or usually say as the vocabulary. This research discuss about the effect of using teaching media on  student’s vocabulary mastery at senior vocational high school at SMK HKBP Pematangsiantar. The objective of study is to find out the effect of  using teaching media on students’ vocabularies mastery in the second years at SMK HKBP Pematangsiantar. The research was conducted with descriptive quantitative and qualitative research where the population is the third year students of SMK HKBP Pematangsiantar and the writer took  46 students as the sample. The instrument to get the data, the writer used test. The data shows that the effect of teaching medias increased students vocabulary mastery. The score of students of SMK HKBP Pematangsianter is getting higher,  where the validity of experimental group is 0, 84 and the validity of control group students is 0, 37. The mean of experimental group is 72, 17 and the mean of control group is 71, 73. The standard deviation of experimental group is 6, 22 and the standard of control group is 6, 00.  The reliability of experimental group is 0, 91 and the reliability of control group is 0, 54. After adapting the data into t-test formula, it’s obtained that t-value is 0, 70 and it is getting high level. After the writer finished analyzing data, he concluded that the students who were using media are increased their English vocabulary mastery. English teachers should creative choosing method in teaching English, specifically in vocabulary. Using pictures for teaching media make the students  interested to learn English and  enjoy the class .
