The Episteme Journal of  Linguistics and Literature (EJLL ) is the  double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the English Department – Language and Arts Faculty  HKBP Nommensen University . The journal focuses on the following topics: English language, applied linguistics, theoretical English linguistics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, comparative linguistics, computational linguistics, and discourse analysis. It provides an academic platform for professionals and researchers to contribute innovative work in the field. EJLL carries original and full-length articles that reflect the latest research and developments in both theoretical and practical aspects of English Linguistics, and Literature.

The journal is published in both print and online versions. The online version is free access and download.

What is e-Version

e-Version First is a feature offered through our web,  It allows PDF version of manuscripts that have been peer reviewed and accepted, to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final printed journal. Readers can freely access or cite the article. We aim to publish accepted manuscripts in e-Version First in two week's time after the final draft completed.

Paper Selection and Publication Process

1). Upon receipt of paper submission, the Editor sends an E-mail of confirmation to the corresponding author within 1-3 working days. If you fail to receive this confirmation, your submission/e-mail may be missed. Please contact the Editor in time for that.

2). Peer review. We use double-blind system for peer-review; the reviewers' identities remain anonymous to authors. The paper will be peer-reviewed by two experts; one is an editorial staff and the other two are external reviewers. The review process may take about 2 weeks.

3). Notification of the result of review by E-mail.

4). The authors revise paper and pay publication fee (100 USD).

5). After publication, the corresponding author will receive two copies of printed journals, free of charge.

6). E-journal in PDF is available on the journal’s webpage, free of charge for download.

An Analysis  Of  Politeness  Strategy

Abstract

Language has a social function as a tool to make connection between human beings. Without language, it seems impossible for people to interact with others in their daily life because language can express people’s feeling, willing, opinion, (Chaer and Agustina, 1995: 19). In short, language is the oral symbols that represent meaning as they are related to real life situation and experience.The writer is interested in study SoimahTalkshowProgram (STS) Programs, because the program entertained and used effective language. It motivates the writer to know whether all the jokes used in STS using politeness. The objective of the research is to identify the types of politeness strategies used in STS. The data are the dialog of transcription of the STS. In analyzing the data The writers using Descriptive qualitative. The types of politeness found in the theory by Brown and Levinson namely Positive Politeness, Negative (STS) in Trans TV.There are four types of Politeness that is used in STS. They are Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness, and Bald on Record Strategy and off record Strategy.There are (41, 3%) positive Politeness, (26, 0%) negative Politeness, (17, 3%) bald on Record Strategy, (15, 2%) off record Strategy ,used in Soimah STS.Positive Politeness is the most widely used in STS.

An Analysis of Conditional Sentences in Barack Obama’s speech

Abstract

This research studies about the Types of Conditional Sentences found in six speeches of Barack Obama. The four types of conditional sentences were analyzed based the theory of Jeremy Harmer and Hester Lott (2004). The types are conditional sentence type 0, conditional sentence type 1, conditional sentence type 2, and conditional sentence type 3. The objectives of this research are to find out what types are used in the six speeches and what type is commonly used. In doing this research, the writer used Qualitative Descriptive Design to analyze the data. The data of this thesis are the speeches of a president. The data were taken from the famous speeches of Barack Obama and the writer limited them on six most famous speeches, they are address to the people of Kenya Speech, address to representatives of the African union speech, Post summit of Americas press conference speech, Statement on historic nuclear agreement with iran speech, Obama gives a speech about the iran nuclear deal speech and Southeast Asian youth initiative fellows address speech. The finding of this research shows that 3 (three) types were found in the speeches and 1 (one) type was not found. From the six speeches, the writer found 6 (six) sentences in address to the people of Kenya Speech, 10 (ten) sentences in the address to representatives of the African union Speech, 4 (four) sentences in the post-summit of Americas press conference speech, 7 (seven) sentences in the statement on historic nuclear agreement with Iran speech, 7 (seven) sentences in the Obama gives a speech about the Iran nuclear deal speech, and 18 (eighteen) sentences in the Southeast Asian youth initiative fellows address speech. So the total is 52 (fifty two) sentences that contain the Conditional Sentences. There are 30 (thirty) sentences of conditional sentence type 0, 18 (eighteen) sentences of conditional sentence type 1, and 4 (four) sentences of conditional sentence type 2. The type that was not found is conditional sentence type 3. The most dominant type that is commonly used in the Barack Obama’s speeches is conditional sentence type 0.

An Analysis of Maxim In The Last Song Movie

Abstract

This research is talking about maxim in Last Song movie. The source of the data of this research is the utterances that exist in Last Song’s script. This thesis use Descriptive Qualitative Method. This research is to find out the types of maxim according to Leech theory and how the maxims are used in Last Song movie. After having analyzed The Last Song movie, the writer found that all six types of maxim based on Geoffrey Leech theory occurred. The six maxims are: Tact maxim, this maxim minimizes the expression of beliefs which imply cost and maximize the expression of belief which implies benefit to other. Tact maxim that is used in the Last Song movie generally used by people because the people cares and wasn’t make the other undergo the cost. Generosity maxim, this maxim minimizes the expression of belief and maximizes the expression of cost to self. Generosity maxim generally used because speaker wants to make something that can give some benefit to other although what the speaker’s action gives some cost to self. Approbation maxim, this Approbation maxim is used by speaker because the speaker wants to avoid saying unpleasant things and make other people feel good by praising to other. Modesty maxim, this maxim is kind of politeness where in this case the speaker tries to minimize praise and maximize dispraise to self. Agreement maxim, this Agreement maxim is used where between speaker and other maximize agreement and minimize disagreement and when doing conversation, they much more direct expressing agreement. This maxim also is the most used maxim in the Last Song movie because in the conversations more expression inquired about opinions and agreement of others.   Sympathy maxim, this sympathy maxim generally used to expressing sympathy, condolences. This maxim is the least used maxim in the Last Song movie. The writer suggests to the readers, people who create film, researchers to give more attention about politeness especially maxim because it is very useful in doing communication.

Language Feature Used In Headlines On Cover Of  Tabloid Magazine

Abstract

Language is unique human inheritance that plays the very important role in human’s life such as in thinking, communicating ideas and negotiating with the others. It is something that cannot separated from human beings. Language as a tool of communication base on central fact of human existence and social process. Language has a very important function in humans to express their though, desires, emotion and feeling. Thus, language is social phenomenon. It is a set of conventional communicative signals used by humans for communication in a community which permits its member to relate to each other. There are oral language, written language , and gesture or body language,  written language as found in  newspaper, magazine, letters etc. Written language as newspaper and magazine  has an important role; that is as a media of communications, report actual events, economics, politics, sports, entertainment news, and so on. In the newspaper, we can find various styles and various of language that can attract listener attention and make the newspaper more interesting. The language which is used in headlines  is different from the text of the news.  The headlines which the writer discussed in the one that found on the cover of the tabloid magazines. language feature that mostly used is noun/participant , its 29,87 %  used .the writer conclude it is happen because most tabloid is explaining something (Noun) followed by  using of verb and Adverb, 20,6 %  , the least  is headlines  using  preposition  its 2,06 %. the writer found that it happened because  headline is focus to subject /object  that being  reported in the headline  From the study it is proved that  the linguistic capability should be skill in writing of headlines.

An Analysis of Speech Act Based on the Recorded Conversation Transcription of the Black Box before the Air Plane Crashes

Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze and find out the categories and the dominant category of speech act on recorded conversation transcription of the black box before the air plane crashed.Speech act is an utterance that has performative function in language and communication. According to Searle, there are five categories of speech acts, they are; representatives, directives, commisives, expressives and declarations. In this research, the writer analyzed speech acts on the recorded conversation transcription of Garuda Indonesia Flight 152, Alaska Airlines Flight 261, American Airlines 587 and Air France 447. In analyzing the data, the writer usedmixed method which represents both quantitative and qualitative information. After doing the analysis, the writer found that there are 94 representatives, 88 directives, 10 commisives, 35 expressives and 2 declarations speect acts with the percentage of the data is 41.05 % representatives, 38.43 % directives, 4.37 % directives, 15.28 % expressives and 0.87 % declarations. She also found that representatives is the dominant category of speech act found in recorded conversation transcription of the black boxes before the air plane crashed. By finishing this research, the writer suggests all the people who work in ACT, captains, pilots, copilots, flight attendants, all the readers and the next researchers to be more motivated in learning speech act because it is very useful for people to be more understandable in doing communication.

Semiotics Analysis Of Rumah Adat Bolon Batak Toba

Abstract

Semiotics Culture is the entire way of life for a group of people ( including both material  and symbolic elements ). It has been existed since  long time ago. Rumah bolon is one of Toba Batak  culture in Samosir Island, North  Sumatra .Rumah bolon very important to  conserve and value preserve it beauty of culture which is drawn in  symbols decorated in  Rumah  Bolon. This is a descriptive qualitative research done by observation, interviews  some  elders, and  alsa by  doing library research . Every symbols of rumah bolon Toba Batak has symbols different meaning. There are 19  symbols found in  Rumah Bolon and analyzed by Dyadic and Triadic sign . The symbol of Hoda-hoda meanings  the greatness, Boraspati meanings blessing and wealth, Sijonggi meanings virility,  Adep- adep and meanings ferility and wealth, Desa Na Ualu meanings strength,  Mata Niari meanings strength, Hariara Sondung  meanings blessed,  Silitong  meanings  powerful,  Simarogung- ogung  meanings glory and prosperity, Simeol- meol  meanings joy and beauty, Dalihan Natolu meanings  respectful,  Ipon- ipon  meanings beauty enhancer, Iran- iran  meanings beautiful and wise, Sitogan  meanings  attitude,  Sitompi and meaning is love, Ulung Paung meanings strength,  Singa- singa meanings  justice and truth, Gajah Dompak  meanings  truth,  Jengger  meanings rejection and safety.all this symbols are realeted a Culture of rumah adat Bolon Batak Toba and the social life in Bataknese ethnic  society.
