The Episteme Journal of English Linguistics and Literature  (JLL) is  double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by English Department, Faculty of Language and Arts  HKBP Nommensen University - Medan - Indonesia  . The journal focuses on the following topics: English language, applied  English linguistics, theoretical English linguistics, Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, comparative linguistics, computational linguistics, and discourse analysis. It provides an academic platform for professionals and researchers to contribute innovative work in the field. JLL carries original and full-length articles that reflect the latest research and developments in both theoretical and practical aspects of  Linguistics and Literature .

The journal is published in both print and online versions. The online version is free access and download.

 

e-Version  is a feature offered through our journal platform. It allows PDF version of manuscripts that have been peer reviewed and accepted, to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final printed journal. Readers can freely access or cite the article.

We aim to publish accepted manuscripts in e-Version  in two week's time after the final draft completed.

Paper Selection and Publication Process

  1. Upon receipt of paper submission, the Editor sends an E-mail of confirmation to the corresponding author within 1-3 working days. If you fail to receive this confirmation, your submission/e-mail may be missed. Please contact the Editor in time for that.
  2. Peer review. We use double-blind system for peer-review; the reviewers' identities remain anonymous to authors. The paper will be peer-reviewed by three experts; one is an editorial staff and the other two are external reviewers. The review process may take about 2 weeks.
  3. Notification of the result of review by E-mail.
  4. The authors revise paper and pay publication fee (100 USD).
  5. After publication, the corresponding author will receive two copies of printed journals, free of charge.
  6. E-journal in PDF is available on the journal's webpage, free of charge for download.

An Analysis Of Types Of Presupposition In Time Magazine Advertisiment

Abstract

         This research  studies about the types of presupposition in TIME Magazine advertisement and the writer want to find out what is the most dominant types of presupposition that used in TIME Magazine. The data are taken from TIME Magazine from the advertisement that is published in TIME Magazine. From 06, 13, 20 April and 4 May 2009. Descriptive quantitative method is used in doing this the research. Descriptive quantitative analysis  is intended to describe and findings the moist dominant types of presupposition used in it. In this the research the writer collected the data by reading the advertisement in TIME Magazine and underlining the advertisement. The data are analyzed by identifying the presupposition based on the types. After analyzing the data, the writer finds that the most dominant types of presupposition used in TIME magazine. From six types of presupposition existential presupposition is the most types of presupposition used in TIME Magazine. Existential presupposition is the presupposition that the assumption assumed to be committed to the existence of the entities names by the speaker and assumed to be present in the noun phrase.

Politeness Expressions In Karonese Nganting Manuk Ceremony

Abstract

         The writer analyze the description of the Politeness in Karonese Nganting Manuk Ceremony by the data and analysis, finally the writer comes to the conclusion that Politeness is one of the important factors in one's socialization and it is used to maintain the social value of the community, including in virtual-community. There are 6 situations of politeness that is used in the Conversations Of Karonese Nganting Manuk Ceremony on 6th May 2009. They are: Greeting, Thanking, Offering, Invitation, Apologizing and Leave-Taking. There are 3 types of politeness used in the Conversations of Karonese Nganting Manuk Ceremony. They are: Positive Politeness Strategy amounts to 23 conversations or 58,9%, Negative Politeness Strategy amounts to 13 conversations or 33,4% and Off-Record Strategy amounts to 3 conversations or 7,7%. There are 5 Politeness Maxims used in the Conversations of Karonese Nganting Manuk Ceremony. They are: Tact Maxim amounts to 4 conversations or 43,6%, Generosity Maxim amounts to 4 conversations or 12,8%, Approbation Maxim amounts to 6 conversations or 17,95%, Agreement Maxim amounts to 6 conversations or 17,95% and Modesty Maxim amounts to 3 conversations or 7,7%.

An Analysis Of Non-Literal Meaning in Beyonce's Selected Song Lyrics

Abstract

        The writer  study about the types of non-literal meaning which are used in Beyonce's selected lyrics. This research is focused on five types of non-literal meaning. There are six songs and forty lyrics become populations and samples in this research which apply Lauren and Bernard's theory (1997) about thirteen types of non-literal meaning, they are personification, hyperbole, metaphor, simile, litotes, euphemism, synecdoche, symbol, paradox, understatement, allegory, apostrophe, irony. The writer analyzed five types of non-literal meaning in forty lyrics of Beyonce by using descriptive method. The meaning of the lyrics mostly differently with the intended meaning. The lyrics implicate a love of somebody.

An Analysis Of The Lexical Errors In Translating English Text

Abstract

               This study is about the analysis of the lexical errors in translating English text and also to find out the causes of doing the errors. In the lexical errors there are two causes of the errors, nasmely: Interlingual and Intralingual. In writing this the research, the writer did a descriptive method. Besides, the writer also made a test toward students of English Department of 2006/2007 academic year of Language and Art Faculty of HKBP Nommensen University. The writer asked the students to translate two English texts and find the data from the result of the translation. Finally, from the data gathered, the writer can made a conclusion that the causes of errors of the lexical errors made by the students are intralingual and interlingual causes. The causes of the errors also give effects to the result of the translation. The writer hopes that this the research can be more useful to the reader in order to increase their knowledge, especially toward the students of English Department of Language and art Faculty, University of HKBP Nommensen Medan.

An Analysis Paragraph Writing Of The Sixth Semester Students Of HKBP Nommensen University

Abstract

          This research studies about the students pargraph writing. The data are the students paragraph of English Students Nommensen University on Sixth Semester. In this the research, the writer collected the data by reading all  the students writing of 17 paragraph and underlined the Topic Sentence, Supporting Sentence, and Concluding Sentence. The data are analyzed by identifying the writing based on the part and types of the paragraph. After analyzing the data, the writer finds that there are the part and types in writing of students. And the capacity of students is not good because ost of the students can not filled the rule of part paragraph, consist of: Topic Sentence, Supporting entence, and Concluding Sentence.

An Analysis of Illocutionary Acts In New Moon Movie

Abstract

       This writing deals with Pragmatic study, illocutionary act in New Moon movie. The objectives of this study are to find out the types and the dominant types of illocutionary acts in New Moon movie. This research is conducted by descriptive quantitative design, which makes a description of the situation or event/ occurances. The data of this study is derived from the movie script of New Moon movie by downloading from internet that focuses on the major character's utterances. The results shows that there are 379 utterances. The findings indicated that New Moon movie applied five types of illocutionary acts: declarations, representatives, expressives, directives, and commissives. The total calculations and percentages of illocutionary acts in each type are declaration 57 (15.04%), representatives 114 (30.08%), expressives 43 (11.35%), directives 127 (33.50%), commissives 38 (10.03%). The dominant type of illocutionary acts is directives 127 (33.50%).
