The Episteme Journal of English Linguistics and Literature  (JLL) is  double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by English Department, Faculty of Language and Arts  HKBP Nommensen University - Medan - Indonesia  . The journal focuses on the following topics: English language, applied  English linguistics, theoretical English linguistics, Sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, comparative linguistics, computational linguistics, and discourse analysis. It provides an academic platform for professionals and researchers to contribute innovative work in the field. JLL carries original and full-length articles that reflect the latest research and developments in both theoretical and practical aspects of  Linguistics and Literature .

The journal is published in both print and online versions. The online version is free access and download.

 

e-Version  is a feature offered through our journal platform. It allows PDF version of manuscripts that have been peer reviewed and accepted, to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final printed journal. Readers can freely access or cite the article.

We aim to publish accepted manuscripts in e-Version  in two week's time after the final draft completed.

Paper Selection and Publication Process

  1. Upon receipt of paper submission, the Editor sends an E-mail of confirmation to the corresponding author within 1-3 working days. If you fail to receive this confirmation, your submission/e-mail may be missed. Please contact the Editor in time for that.
  2. Peer review. We use double-blind system for peer-review; the reviewers' identities remain anonymous to authors. The paper will be peer-reviewed by three experts; one is an editorial staff and the other two are external reviewers. The review process may take about 2 weeks.
  3. Notification of the result of review by E-mail.
  4. The authors revise paper and pay publication fee (100 USD).
  5. After publication, the corresponding author will receive two copies of printed journals, free of charge.
  6. E-journal in PDF is available on the journal's webpage, free of charge for download.

Abstract

        This study investigates modality used in the delegation speeches of APEC conference 2013 addressed in the types of modality, value of modality and the explanation on the modality context. This study was analyzed qualitatively. The finding of this study is thefirst speech led the dominant use of modalization of probability and modulation of inclination because the speaker in here did not only expressing the ideas but also offer listener to continue on his goal .

"An Analysis of Preposition in the book of Mark of the Holy Bible"

Abstract

                 This research studies about the usse of the prepositions in the Holy Bible of King James Version. The source of this research is the Holy Bible in the book of Mark chapter 4 and 8. The writer used the theory of Jayanthi Dakshina Murthy. A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show its relation to some other word in the sentence. The research used qualitative research. According to Soehartono, qualitative research is a way or strategy to get the data which are needed in the research, in which the data were analyzed by types of preposition. There are 6 types of prepositions which are used in Holy Bible in Mark chapter 4 and 8, they are preposition of place or position, preposition of time, preposition of manner or method, preposition of reason or purpose, preposition of possession and preposition of direction. After analyzing the book of Mark, the writer found that preposition of place or position is the most dominant in the book of Mark of the Holy Bible. The writer suggests students or readers to read English Holy Bible more frequently to improve their English because through the English Holy Bible, the reader can get many new words that they have not found before and suggests the readers can use this thesis as reference to analyze the using of the preposition in the book of Mark of the Holy Bible.

Abstract

           The writer discusses five types of language functions based on the theory proposed by Finocchiaro and Brumfit, such as personal, interpersonal, directive, referential, and imaginative function. There were five types of function of language found in economical news article .In this study, the most dominant type of language function  is Referential function. It means that the most of the content of the economical  news is used mostly for sharing information.

An Analysis Of Presupposition On President Barack Obama's Speech

On His  First And Second Inaugural Addresses

Abstract

      The writer analize of presupposition in Barack Obama's speeches on his first and second inaugural addresses, the writer comes to conclusion mentioned as the following.In this study, the writer found that there are five types of presupposition. They were Existential presupposition (53.12%), Factive presupposition (15.17%), Lexical presupposition (24.55%), Structural presupposition (6.69%), and Non-factivepresupposition (0.44%).The most dominant presupposition used in Barack Obama's speeches in his first and second inaugural addresses was Existential presupposition.The Counterfactual presupposition did not exist in Barack Obama's speeches in his first and second inaugural addresses.The existential presupposition was the most dominant in Barack Obama's speeches because the speeches contained more definite descriptive, real facts and  real information to stimulate the audiences' attention and to emphasize his ideas and promises.

Politeness In Conversation Between Tourist And Guide In Medan

Abstract

This research is about politeness. The source data of this research is conversation between tourist and guide in Medan. According to Yule, Politeness is an interaction, which can then be defined as the means employed to show awareness of another person's face and politeness classified into "Self and other: say nothing, Say something: off and on record, Positive and negative politeness. The writer focus to make data Positive and Negative politeness. This research uses Qualitative Method. This research to find out the types of politeness used and to find out the most dominant types of politeness found in conversation between tourist and guide. The data are analyzed based on Yule's theory. Having analyzed conversation, there are two types of conversational politeness which occurred in the conversation tourist and guide. They are 5 Positive Politeness is 35.7 % and 9 Negative Politeness is 64.3%. Negative politeness is a general expression which is implied by a speaker, and the positive is a specific expression which is implied by a speaker. Negative Politeness is a facing act which is oriented to the person's negative face will tend to show difference, emphasize the importance of the other's time or concern and even include an apology for the imposition or interruption. Positive Politeness is a face saving ct which is concerned with the person's positive face will tend to show solidarity, emphasize that both speaker want the same thing, and that have a common goal. The writer need guide improvement of his ability to make a good way in speaking to the tourist, and hope the guide would be more motivated to increase their knowledge about politeness expression and to maximize the positive politeness and minimize the use of negative politeness.

Metaphor Analysis On Article Of Legislative Election In The Jakarta Post

Abstract

               The writer analyze the metaphor on article of legislative election in The Jakarta Post, the writer gets the conclusion as follows: There are two classes of metaphor, namely syntactic metaphor, and semantic metaphor. Syntactic metaphor is divided into four (4) types, namely noun metaphor, verb metaphor, adjective metaphor and adverb metaphor, while semantic metaphor is divided into three (3) types, namely concretive metaphor, animistic metaphor, and humanizing metaphor. There are twenty one (21) articles in The Jakarta Post from the given sample contains twenty one (21) articles consist of seven types of metaphor. The following is the result of the research: noun metaphor is fourteen (14), verb metaphor is seven (7), adjective metaphor is eleven (11), adverb metaphor is two (2), concretive metaphor is twenty seven (27), animistic metaphor is two (2), and humanizing metaphor is five (5).The most dominant types of metaphor in the election article of The Jakarta Post is concretive metaphor. It shows that in the article, people always use a concrete term to talk about an abstract thing; it makes the readers more understand and interest about the information or the messages which is delivered.
